Observation of non-reciprocal harmonic conversion in real sounds

چکیده

Abstract Reciprocity guarantees that in most media, sound transmission is symmetric between two points of space when the location source and receiver are interchanged. This fundamental law can be broken non-linear often at cost detrimental input power levels, large insertion losses, ideally prepared single-frequency signals. Thus, previous observations non-reciprocal have focused on pure tones, cannot handle real sounds composed various harmonics a low-frequency note, as generated for example by musical instruments. Here, we extend reach acoustics achieving large, tunable, timbre-preserved notes several harmonics, originating from achieved non-linear, actively reconfigurable, non-Hermitian isolator arbitrarily low any audible frequency, while providing isolation levels up to 30dB tunable level gain. Our findings may find applications isolation, noise control, metamaterials, analog audio processing.

Auditory induction: reciprocal changes in alternating sounds.

When portions of a sound are replaced by a potential masker, the missing fragments may be perceptually restored, resulting in apparent continuity of the interrupted signal. This phenomenon has been examined extensively by using pulsation threshold, auditory induction, and phonemic restoration paradigms in which two sounds, the inducer and the inducee, are alternated (ABABA...), and the conditio...

Source-Filter Decomposition of Harmonic Sounds

This paper describes a method for decomposing steady-state instrument data into excitation and formant filter components. The input data, taken from several series of recordings of acoustical instruments is analyzed in the frequency domain, and for each series a model is built, which most accurately represents the data as a source-filter system. The source part is taken to be a harmonic excitat...

Real-Time Conversion of Stereo Audio to 5.1 Channel Audio for Providing Realistic Sounds

In this paper, we address issues associated with the real-time implementation of upmixing stereo audio into 5.1 channel audio in order to improve audio realism. First, we review four different upmixing methods, including a passive surround decoding method, a least-meansquare based upmixing method, a principal component analysis based upmixing method, and an adaptive panning method. After that, ...

Neural correlates of timbre change in harmonic sounds.

Timbre is a major structuring force in music and one of the most important and ecologically relevant features of auditory events. We used sound stimuli selected on the basis of previous psychophysiological studies to investigate the neural correlates of timbre perception. Our results indicate that both the left and right hemispheres are involved in timbre processing, challenging the conventiona...

Multipitch Estimation of Quasi-harmonic Sounds in Colored Noise

This paper proposes a new multipitch estimator based on a likelihood maximization principle. For each tone, a sinusoidal model is assumed with a colored, Moving-Average, background noise and an autoregressive spectral envelope for the overtones. A monopitch estimator is derived following a Weighted Maximum Likelihood principle and leads to find the fundamental frequency (F0) which jointly maxim...
